What I'm thankful for this Thanksgiving

Hello Feral Friends,

For the past few years, I've shared "what I'm thankful for" on Thanksgiving day via this blog. I'm trying to keep the blog more "rescue business" vs "personal" these days, sharing my personal stuff on facebook, but I think this is on tradition I will continue regardless as my life is still MOSTLY RESCUE, and a little personal peppered in never hurt anyone.

This year, this Thanksgiving morning, I'm thankful that I have Monkey on my lap. My Cajun boy from New Orleans loves me more than any other being on this planet and reminds me that love can be unconditional.

Amazing people came into my life this year, many through the RESCUE and they continue to benefit the RESCUE.

In the summer, a litter of abandoned kittens brought Joanne Roehm to me. She unlike most others, was willing to take care of the kittens and bring them to health despite the fact that she had no idea what she was doing and they were knocking on death's door when she found them. With some coaching, she became the Kitten Mama. You can read her blog. See sidebar for link.

Joanne didn't just take care of the kittens, she took care of ME! Well, she took care of MY RESCUE! And with her background in non-profit management/consulting, she has brought Carol's Ferals a long way in a short time. I'm thankful to my Board of Directors for stepping up to help bring about a day when TNR is a household word. Thank you to Jim Schalk, Kolene Allen, Evan Rossio, Matt Jarrells and of course Joanne.

Three other amazing women have joined me in getting Carol's Ferals to a point where with continued commitment, I will be better able to focus my attention toward growing the organization and doing more overseeing, less hands on and freeing myself up to promote TNR in the community. Thanks to Jolyn Clark, my amazing Adoption Coordinator who is giving the ADOPTION branch of Carol's Ferals her special touch and changing the lives of a lot of previously homeless kitties. Sheri Meadows found kittens in a woodpile behind her house and has since stepped into the role of Facilities Manager at Brooknelle. I'm grateful to her for a multitude of reasons, but mostly for her taking all of my new client phone calls. I love you Sheri!
Both Sheri and Jolyn have amazing women alongside them and I am also very grateful for Brandi Meadows and Vic Cabot who help keep everything running smoothly. The third amazing woman is Liz Schovey. I didn't even actually help Liz with cats, but when I was on a break cleaning up the post Distemper mess at Brooknelle, I sent her elsewhere for help, yet today SHE HELPS ME. Liz is the Administrative Assistant to Carol's Ferals. Life is so much better with her hands on the data bases and taking care of everything I can't seem to manage on my own.

I know that people who volunteer for Carol's Ferals are doing it for the cats and NOT ME specifically. But I feel so much love and support from my volunteers, that I feel they are doing it for me. Thank you to Lisa McDaniel and Ian Seger for all your hard work in the restructuring of Brooknelle after the Distemper Disaster of 2009. Thank you for helping me organize my garage too! My hearse, Liza Jane really appreciates being indoors now. As do my neighbors who are not appreciative of having a death mobile in plain view in the complex.

The list of people who help me goes on for miles. And at the risk of leaving someone out, I feel I want to thank those that I can, those whose names tumble out of my head and onto my keyboard. Stephanie Meaney, Pat Baxter, Sara Baker, Arlene Gryga, Lois Levey, Darla Alexander, Robbin Alexander, Bev Dykstra, Roxanne Ketchapaw, Kathleen & Jim Oliver, Amy Townsend, Erica Carranco, Kaela Sowa, Tiffany Traxler, Tom and Maia Kerwin.

Eileen Burr and her team of sewers who make pet beds, Julie Williams for pee pads and Ray Jones for carrier cage modifications.

Thank you Liz Snavely, Gabriel James & Ask Me When for playing at my benefit. And Liz, thank you for organizing and promoting it.

I'm thankful to Ryan Hipp for creating my Carol's Ferals logo. To Jason Buys for saving my life by introducing me to Jott, Constant Contact and Gmail. Gabby thank you not wanting to kill me when you found out that I went with Gmail after several years of your urging me to dump AOL. And thanks Jolyn for turning me on to FACEBOOK!

Thanks to Tim Whitford at World of Floors for donating beautiful vinyl flooring to the remodeling of Brooknelle. And thank you Jerry Peterson for installing it for free. James, you know I appreciate all you do too, but thank you!

Thanks to all who have adopted cats to allow me to take in more, and to all who bring me cats to fix so that THERE ARE NO MORE!

I'm grateful for all who have donated time, funds and items to help me make Carol's Ferals possible.

One can't go long in speaking about Carol's Ferals without giving great thanks to Dr. Bruce Langlois who makes it all possible. His continued commitment to bringing about a day where healthy, adoptable animals are no longer killed in shelters keeps me able to make my commitment to the same. Working tirelessly to see this happen with actual vision and action to do so gives me the hope and strength I need to carry on.

Thank you Kaylyn Kraii for writing the Petco grant that brought me $5K to pay for out of county spay/neuters. With only $600 left in the fund, over 125 cats were fixed for free enabling out of county cats to reap the same benefits of the Kent County cats graciously paid for by Vicky's Pet Connection. Of course....thank you Vicky and Nancy!

Thank you to all who worked tirelessly to get the Class B Animal Dealer out of The Montcalm Animal Shelter. And thanks to all who have contributed to the funding of my promise to pay for the cremation of the animals that we can't save currently.

On a more personal note: I'm thankful that Gabby is home safe. And I'm thankful to him for taking Mavros and Pistachio to live with him and for all his hard work at Brooknelle. Take a number to THANK HIM! (come to Brooknelle and you'll know what that means).

Thank you Linda Gietzen for turning me onto sweat lodges, all good things revolving around the female spirit, and for being a good friend and sometimes when necessary, a second mom.

To all my friends who still love me and keep in touch with me though I suck at keeping in touch with them, I am so utterly and humbly grateful!

For the people who are no longer in my life, I wish you well but am thankful that we are no longer hurting each other.

Thank you to Chris for reminding me that there is "something more out there" and for making me smile.

And thank you God for my health and strength which enable me to make my dreams a reality.

I wish you all a joyful holiday!
Carol

Name the 1,000th cat fixed in 2009 CONTEST

Trapped by Dian Thomas and brought in for neuter last week, Mr. 1,000 (as we are calling him for the moment) made out 1K cat goal for the year. But we need a proper name for him. Names have come across fb and by other means, and Carol has chosen her top 4.

Place your vote by going to the Carol's Ferals fan page:
http://www.facebook.com/#/pages/Carols-Ferals/190766910232?ref=ts

Name the 1,000 cat fixed at CF: Carol's top 4 choices. Give me your votes!

A) Well, seeing as "thousand" in Italian is mille. I should think his name would be Cecil B. DeMille!
B ) Kilo: Kilo is Greek for 1000.
C) Grover: Last printed 1000 bill had president Grover Cleveland's face on it.
D) Chiliad: Chili·ad (kil′ē ad′)...noun 1. a thousand; group of 1,000

PS There is no prize for this contest......JUST RECOGNITION!

Mable is with the angels now

Hello Feral Friends~

It is with great joy I tell you about Mable who left this world on Wednesday afternoon.

Are you surprised to hear me say GREAT JOY when speaking of the euthanization of an animal?

Don't be. Life lessons (and not just those to do with animals) have shown me that THERE ARE WORSE THINGS THAN DEATH. And the end of life is not always needing to be sorrowful.

About two years ago, I was working with Angie and Mike from Lowell who were feeding a number of strays and ferals on their property. We got every cat and kitten fixed. But last year they lost their home and without a place for them to take the cats, they were at risk of having to just leave them behind. Caring much for them, they couldn't bring themselves to it and contacted me. I took 11 cats into my program. Two or three were feral and relocated to barn homes. The others except one were put into the HSKC adoption program. I have a deal with the Humane Society of Kent County NOT TO EUTHANIZE any of the cats I bring them. Instead, I take them back if they become sick or are deemed unadoptable. But all cats were placed.

The one I didn't take was Mable. She was a newcomer to Angie and Mike's colony and wasn't being well received by the others. I took her in to be fixed since she wasn't fixed in the first round. At the time, they called her Old Timer. This was appropriate because she was about 15 years old. I found her to be already spayed. It was obvious that she was previously owned and I knew that she needed to remain an indoor cat. She was quiet and not ultra outgoing and just kinda kept to herself, so I brought her into my adoption program.

About 6 weeks ago, Jolyn and Vic noticed she was losing weight and her teeth looked bad. So I made an appointment to have her looked at. Surely enough, she had some teeth that needed to be extracted and my vet confirmed that she was about 16 years old, arthritic and just an old girl.

I pampered her with soft food till just last week, she stopped eating all together. Force feeding and fluids didn't help her and she started to slide downhill fast. On Wednesday I took her in and Bruce diagnosed her with renal failure and I had her euthanized.

It was peaceful and she's not in that sickly body anymore. And it's for that, I am JOYFUL.

What would have happened to Mable had she not wandered into the managed stray/feral colony of Mike and Angie? Would she have survived last winter at her advanced age? Who would have taken her in? What would have become of her?

This is just one of the benefits provided all cats by supporting TNR. Because of TNR, Mable was identified as a friendly cat who was obviously cast out or long before lost. And she had a very comfortable warm last year of her life. She was showered with love and well cared for. And even if only I had her for a day, she would have left this world surrounded by love.

TNR. Not just good for feral cats. Not just good for controlling the population. Good for Mable.

Mabeline, May your spirit be eternal.

NO TRAPPING THIS WEEK! NOT TILL NOV 16th

My Vet Bruce Langlois is going to travel all the way to a remote part of Guyana to spay and neuter a bunch of wild dogs that are threatening some endangered species of turtles. This makes me very happy. While people patrol the areas where the turtle nests are to protect them from the dogs, they find the solution spay/neuter vs just killing the dogs. Wow! A humane, civilized solution! Isn't that awesome.

More awesome is the fact that when Bruce is away....this cat can play. So I'm taking the week off of all duties and getting out of dodge. This mean....no spay/neuter, no vaccines, no food pick up, no NOTHING! I'm going off the grid that week. Will visit some friends in Detroit and cozy up with my close friends and TRY not to think of cats.

Everything will be back on beginning Monday, November 16th which leaves free my Sunday, 44th Birthday. Going to put myself first that day! No gifts please! But if you want....you can always make a donation to my favorite animal organization, Carol's Ferals!

NO MORE HACKS

Hello Feral Friends!

The hacks are done.
I think I figured it out.
I had a setting where it was possible to upload directly to my blog via email. Apparently some companies (in US, Italy and Asia) were just addressing their advertising to random emails and my blogger software allowed the posts.

I've since disabled this feature so we should be all good for now!

YTD: 987 cats spayed/neutered.
We will hit our 1K goal before December 1st!
This makes me very happy!

Taking this week off.
Will begin trapping again on Monday, November 16th.

: ) Carol

Friday, November 06, 2009

Have deleted all hacked in entries

I have a way to see if any come into my blogger as a draft.
They won't publish directly.

I'll keep you all posted.
But for now, It's all good!

YTD 987 cats fixed!

Had our second board meeting last night.
It went very well.
I'm truly blessed to have so many wonderful people who want to offer their time and talents to furthering the mission of Carol's Ferals!

Hacks are NOT INTENTIONAL

Thank goodness we have one from an english speaking company.

I talked to Cary today. He's in Las Vegas. Lucky Duck!

This post was sent in the form of an email by some automated program.

So there must be some code or some email address that sends these emails to my blogger.

I think I can fix this myself by not allowing posts via email.

If it continues I will figure out how to contact Blogger. But for now, it's not meant to be harmful. So I'm OK with it!

: ) C

CRAZY BLOG HACKS

now i can't get on top of the flippin' hacked blog entry!
good god!

blog hacker

the prior post is the first one that's at least in ENGLISH.

i'm in contact with Cary. we will have to see what comes of our talk.

leaving it up cuz i want him to see it.

interesting.

whatever though...don't click on any links in these strange posts!

November's Adoptable of the Month

My name is Woody, and I am a beautiful Siamese mix. I'm a little cross-eyed, but it adds to my character! I am declawed in the front, neutered and vaccinated. I absolutely love a good belly rub, and I'm not afraid to tell you how I feel. I'm very vocal and I always have something to say.

My family didn't want me anymore, because I was allowed to go outside and I scared the neighbor's dog so bad that she wouldn't come out anymore! So far, I've been gentle with dogs in foster care. I think that dog was a scaredy-cat! Anyways, I was on my way to the shelter when Carol's Ferals came to my rescue. If I wasn't allowed to go outside, I never would have gotten in trouble in the first place!

My owners thought it wasn't fair to keep me inside, but they also declawed my front feet, so really it was pretty dangerous for me to be out there on my own with no way to defend myself. All of the kitties here, and especially me without my claws, need safe indoor-only homes.

Contact Jolyn to meet me!

Carol's Ferals Update - November 2, 2009

Hello Feral Friends-

It feels as though winter is upon us. While watching the last leaves fall from the trees, I'm actually relieved because when the weather gets cold, intact female cats don't go into "heat" and we can have a winter without kittens! This is probably the greatest thing about living in Michigan and a major reason for my not moving to a warmer climate. UNFORTUNATELY that last warm bit we had very likely means December babies, so I'm bracing myself. My whole "looking forward to spring" changed when I got into cat rescue.

October brought some changes to Carol's Ferals and I'm thrilled to report on some of these changes here....NOW!

With the guidance of Joanne Roehm who some of you might know as "The Kitten Mama" by her blogging her experiences of mothering a litter of neo-natal kittens this summer, Carol's Ferals actually has assembled a Board of Directors. Taking a seat on the board are Joanne, Kolene Allen, Matt Jarrells, Evan Rossio, and Jim Schalk. These fine folks will be steering Carol's Ferals toward bigger and better things. Mainly.....we want to see TNR become a "household word."

Jolyn Clark has accepted the position of Adoption Coordinator and all adoptions of friendly cats and kittens will be put in her capable hands. So far she's doing a great job and the cats are benefiting greatly from her expertise. All cats are receiving weekly wellness checks, nail trims, etc by Jolyn and Vic Cabot.

We are instituting a couple of new programs beginning this month. First is our ADOPTABLE OF THE MONTH. Here we will feature one cat that will be put to the forefront of all our media outlets. We hope to boost adoption by doing this and allowing everyone to know some of our wonderful cats that would love to find a great home. While TNR remains the focus of Carol's Ferals....adoption is going to be getting a greater push with Jolyn at the helm.

Another program that begins in November is "THE TWELVE MONTHS OF GIVING". Each month a new item of need will be announced via this blog, Twitter, and Facebook.

Items can be dropped off at Brooknelle or The Critter Cottage in Ada.

We will also be collecting used printer ink cartridges at either location. These when turned in for recycling provide free office products that Carol's Ferals uses for communication, etc.

Later this month, we will be announcing our End of the Year Campaign and we will be communicating with all of you about that soon.

There are great changes going on at Carol's Ferals. We hope to be able to grow to better serve the feral and stray cats of West Michigan. Join us as we move toward a day when everyone knows "Just because you can't touch them, doesn't mean you can't help them."
