A good weekend for adoption

Hello Feral Friends-

Thanks to all of you who stopped by and visited with us and our amazing cats during our adoption event this past weekend. We really felt supported by our fellow rescue friends and are very greatful for your taking time out of your busy "cat stuffed" lives to come and meet the meows.

I am happy to report that we found homes for 6 kittens. Since the weekend, 4 have been spayed and neutered and two others just need a little time before they can be fixed and sent to their new homes.

Flopsy and Mopsy the two callico girls from Streak's litter went home with Joan and Rob Roberts.

And a really happy Peaches and Baby are on route as I write to their new home with a sweet little girl who is thrilled to have two new kitties after losing their cat to Feline Leukemia.

Even semi-feral Lily's kittens were in demand and Leo and Lincoln will be joining their new family in a couple of weeks when they are big enought to be fixed.

It's time to celebrate a little.

We plan to have regualar adoption hours weekly so that people can come by and meet our precious babies. Hopefully we will be abel to find homes for them all soon and get back to doing more rescue work.

Thanks for all your good thoughts and support!

Adoption Event At Our New Location

Hello Friends

Finally, we are in our new location. This week we get our own front door. And this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 24th & 25th between 1-5pm we are inviting the public (through and ad in the GR Press) to come over and see our adorable adoptable cats and kittens.

If you know anyone looking for a kitten or a mature rescue cat please send them our way.

Jandy's Home Adoption Center is located at 4600 Knapp N.E. in Grand Rapids at The Brooknelle Pet Resort.

Amy Pietras will be hosting a microchipping clinic as well. So if anyone would like to be "the ultimate in responsible pet owner", bring your cats and dogs to her and she will have them forever identified as YOURS. Microchipping runs $25 per animal.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
Carol

PS Please note, only a small number of cats are available for immediate adoption. The majority of kittens are too young to be spayed/neutered and receive first shots. So there will be a wait time before you can take a kitten home. Bob, Scott and Pierre, M&M and others however ARE ready to go home with you sooner!

Some Good Words From BFAS

Hello Feral Friends:
The following are words from Michael Mountain of Best Friends Animal Society. Click the link to see the wonderful acts of kindness towards animals.

~~ Carol

Dear Members and Friends,

According to the Best Friends national poll, 96 percent of
Americans believe strongly that animals should never be abused.
Yet millions still die in our animal “shelters” every year.
Hundreds of millions die in cruel experiments …
and billions in the factory farms.

So what’s going on here? Are we all just talking the talk,
rather than walking the walk?

More likely it’s a case of people saying,
“Yes, kindness to animals matters.
But if you want to really change things, you’re
going to need to lead the way and make it
reasonably easy for us to follow.”

One good example of this: More than half of all
Americans told us they’d be more likely to buy
food products from animals who were raised humanely,
even if it costs more. The problem for most people is
that the humane option is just not readily available.

So we need to put kindness to animals firmly on the
national agenda.

A hundred years ago, most people knew that child labor
was wrong. But it just kept going – until the Women’s
Humane Society of Pennsylvania raised the flag, took a stand
on the issue, and lobbied for the laws that would abolish
it in this country.

It’s the same way with every social issue. Everyone knows
these things are wrong, and most of us are very willing to
help make a difference when someone takes the lead and
shows that we CAN make a difference.

The Best Friends national poll indicates that we’re approaching
a classic “tipping point” in terms of kindness to animals.

So this weekend, we’re asking people everywhere to perform at least
ONE ACT OF KINDNESS TO ANIMALS, and to report it
on the Best Friends website.

Please encourage your friends and family to join in.
And report your act of kindness on the Best Friends Network
at http://network.bestfriends.org.

The odometer is already ticking. Let’s see how many thousands
of AOK’s (acts of kindness) we can clock up.

Tomorrow: The Best Friends Kindness Index:
where the country is at.

A better world through kindness to animals.

We are IN!

Hello Feral Friends-

We are IN! With the help of some wonderful volunteers (Deb Metcalf and Allison Laurie) we moved 22 cats and kittens into our new adoption center at Brooknelle Pet Resort.

The kitties LOVE their new digs! It's a really great little space and it will be PUUUURRRFECT for us to showcase our wonderful adoptable pets!

Thank you Dr. Bruce Langlois for renting us this space. Also thanks to World of Floors on 28th Street for donating our vinyl flooring. Allison, Scott and Deb, thanks for helping us move in.
And also, thank you to everyone who has prayed that we would get where we finally are!

Next weekend we will be having an adoption event and microchip clinic. Keep an eye on the blog for details, or visit the Jandy's Home website at: www.jandyshome.org.

Ciao for now-
Carol

Thank You Barb Olson

A special Thank You to Barb Olson who graciously gave us free reign in her basement and garage for several weeks as we TNR'd every cat in our path. I don't have the statistics but there were at least 50 cats that came through her doors. Then we saddled her with 5 moms and kittens who took over her garage AND LIFE. Since taking on this task, Barb hasn't said no to anything we asked of her. She allowed us to use her extra rooms for fosters. She used her own money for all the supplies, food and litter and even sprung for the shave on M&M. She worked on socializing the cats and kittens and she never let us down.

Barb, you are the best! Thank you for making it possible for Amy and I to help a lot of kitties in need. We had no place to go before you! And now, with your generous financial help, we will be able to rent our adoption center and hopefully find homes for some really wonderful cats and kittens!

Barb, you are the best!!!
Thank You
Carol & Amy

Come see us at PETSmart

Hello Feral Friends-

This weekend, Saturday and Sunday - June 17th & 18th, Amy and I will be at PETSmart with a wonderful group of adoptable cats and kittens. Featured will be two sweet Moms and their litters of frolicking, fluffy babies. Also, you can come by and meet Sandie, M&M, Pierre and Bob.

Pierre is only 11 weeks old and will steal your heart. He was found wandering the streets at his very tender age. Lucky for him, somone called Amy and off she went to rescue him.

Sandie and M&M were both trapped at Sandy Pines but during rehab made it clear that they were not feral in the least. M& M is a Maine Coon who looks a little funny cuz he has had to be shaved down to the skin to save him from getting a skin infection from all the mats he had in his fur when we trapped him. Sandie is the talker of the bunch!

Bob is the newest addition to our family of abandoned and now rescued feline children. He is a very handsome 2 year old brown tabby who is SUPER LAID BACK!

Please stop by and see us. We will be there till at least 5pm each day!

And don't forget, if you want an adorable kitten or a sweet young Mama Kitty, you can come by our new Adoption Center next weekend. Watch the blog for details!!

We have an adoption center!!

Hello Feral Friends-

Only a few short days ago I wrote that our prayers were answered and that we had a space to showcase our friendly adoptable cats. I can't believe what has come together in such a short time. After Dr. Langlois agreed to rent us the spot, Amy, Mike and I cleared out the small stuff. The next day I did a little fine tuning and swept up a bit. On Tuesday, Allison (our first official volunteer) and her beau Scott came by and ripped out the carpet stripping and cleaned the windows, swept up more and polished the paneling. Last night I stopped by WORLD OF FLOORS on 28th Street (www.worldoffloors.com) and inquired about getting some vinyl flooring to cover our 11 X 23 foot space. TODAY, I got word from Tim, the owner who not only donated the flooring, BUT personally delivered it to our location within 50 minutes of talking to him. Thank you Tim for saving us a great deal of money that can be WAY better put to use helping cats and kittens in need.

My dear friend Mike Welch (Savior of Feral Cats) and his buddy James installed the donated flooring! What a couple of great guys. Mike will risk life and limb for cats. And being that he works with the most surely of ferals, he literally has RISKED LIMBS FOR SURE!

Tomorrow, I will be meeting with another volunteer and her son and we will load in cages and supplies. And Lord willin' by Thursday night, we will have all the cats and kitten in their new digs! All of this will have happened in less than a week.

Thank you to everyone who has worked to help us get to this point. We plan to have an open house the weekend of June 24th & 25th. Keep an eye on the blog and at www.jandyshome.org for details. If you want to see some of our adorable kittens and awesome cats that are available for adoption, swing on over to Petsmart on 28th Street where we will be set up in the back aisle of the store! We will all be looking forward to seeing you on Saturday and Sunday!

Ferally Yours!
Carol

Prayers Answered!

Hello Feral Friends-

My prayers have been answered. By the wonderful Dr. Bruce Langlois...big suprise! Isn't he the one who helps us with EVERYTHING? If he isn't spaying and neutering our cats, he is coming in at all hours of the night to tend to their needs and even making house calls. And now, he found us a place from which to operate Jandy's Home. Turns out Dr. Langlois not only owns The Animal Hospital of Lowell, but he also owns Brooknell Pet Resort located at 4600 Knapp. And in that wonderful establishment, he has a small space that we are renting to base our operations!

So this week we are all working like crazy to get the space ready to house our adoptable cats and recovering TNR ferals. Just day before yesterday, I sat in Barb's garage with my head in my hands crying over our situation, and now....WE HAVE A PLACE!

I'm thrilled to pieces as is Amy Pietras my partner in crime! This week we will be setting up the place and preparing to showcase our adoptable cats this upcoming weekend and the following weekend at Petsmart on 28th Street. It's going to be a VERY busy week.

Once we get the place set up, we want you to swing by and see our adorable kittens and wonderful adult cats! We will keep you posted on our progress.

Thanks for hanging with us!

Toby

This is Toby!
If you were within ear shot of him,
you would hear him purrrrrring!

Last week I got a call from Jeanine Buckner of Reuben's Room. She has a client whose daughter in-law found a little gray kitten in the street nearby her house. She called Jeanine and she refered Debbie to me. We met at the Chow Hound near Barb's house and I immediately took the weak and weary little kitten to nurse on one of the mothers there. I personally didn't think he was going to make it. Later it was discovered that a cat with similar markings was found dead in the road about a block from where he was found. Likely his mother was hit by a car. A sad start to his tale.

Being pretty weak and sickly, he didn't take to any mom right off the bat and Barb said that she would syringe feed him. Jeanine brought some KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer) and feeding began. The following day, Barb noticed that the kitten was waking funny. Amy took him to the vet and found that he had a problem with his right front leg (or arm...as I like to call it). Seems it was injured and fused together improperly. Toby had his little arm put in a splint and was sent home the next day.

Needless to say, I took him into my garage. For the first couple of days he dragged the splinted leg around behind him. When he laid down, the poor little arm was behind him in an impossible angle that seemed nothing short of uncomfortable. Gabby and I corrected him whenever we noticed he might be unhappy in his backwards arm situation. Amy would come over daily and feed him and play with him and cuddle the heck out of him. He began to hold his arm out in front of him and stopped dragging it. Gabby made the mistake of letting him down on the garage floor and he promptly ran behind a shelving unit. Gabby fished him out and decided that he wouldn't underestimate this little guy again. So he has a bum gam...that doesn't slow him down in the least!

Then Amy came over one day alone and made the same mistake of letting him down on my livingroom floor unsupervised while she went to the fridge to grab a coke. Big mistake! He ran right behind a huge wall unit display case and it took Amy and Mike (who she had to call over from home) more than an hour to take the thing apart to free him. Lesson learned! Don't put down kitten! He is comprimised only in YOUR own mind. He sees no obstacles and runs like Forest Gump!

He will probably cost us a small fortune. He goes in for another x-ray on Thursday. If necessary, he may have to have his little arm rebroken and set right. Of course, we are praying that this isn't the case as I'm sure it will not be a pleasant recovery. But if it is to be, we will have it done because this little purr box is the sweetest little thing and deserves a chance at a nice life.
If you would like to contribute to his medical expenses which are expected to reach at least $400, feel free to send a donation in his name to Jandy's Home. You can learn more about Amy's organization by visiting www.jandyshome.org. To make a donation via paypal, sent payment to: donate@jandyshome.org. If you would like to make donation the old fashioned way (with a check and a stamp), you can send payment to:

Thank you for taking an interest in our dear, darling little Toby!

Anyone Have A Building We Can Use?

Hello Feral Friends

The current tally of cats under our umbrella of care is 70! That's a lot of cats. They are here and there and everywhere. The 14 Hell House cats are in Wayland with Roxanne and Randy. So are two tame Katrina cats (Maine Coon and Torti). We are not even counting the FIV positive Katrina ferals that they are making a special outdoor colony for.

Pat Baxter has Molly and Kittens. Marianne and Rich Gardner have Freckle and her 5 kittens. Ranger Brenda (from Sandy Pines Resort) has the two kittens from the porch on Fuller and three kittens that one of the Sandy Pines cats gave birth to in the trap the night before she was scheduled to be spayed. Amy Townsend (from C-SNIP) has 4 feral kittens from Lisa Gray who need much socializing and 1 little white baby who nearly died on us last week (not suprising since mom gave birth to it in a box of broken glass and then transfered it to a box of nails). I have a feral mom and 5 kittens that are very nice that came out of a backyard on the SE side of town. I also have Mango the Katrina cat and M&M the Maine Coon who Amy Pietras trapped at Sandy Pines and turned out to be the friendliest, most needy cat on the planet and not feral in any way! Barb Olson has Sandie and Minnie Mouse and 4 Moms and kittens but they have to go by the end of the week as she is putting her home on the market. Amy Townsend will take the Moms and Kittens but we still need a foster home for Sandie and Minnie Mouse.

The fostering situation is good for the moment. But as we get more, we will find ourselves in dire straits.

What we NEED is a building or a house of some sort where we can house these cats! If we had a place, we could easily take care of all of them and just have volunteers come in to help out now and then and not have to depend on the kindness of fosters as we are doing now. Not to say that fostering doesn't work...but we need a place where we can keep them under one umbrella to make adoptions and vet care easier. And we need a place to rehab ferals and so far, nobody has stepped up for that one.

I know this is a huge request, but maybe someone out there knows somebody who has a building or space that they are not using that we can use for a couple of months or so. If we weren't spending all of our money on traps, vet bills and gas, we would just rent a building ourselves, but every penny we have is going to just that. Later I'll tell you about Toby, who will be our most expensive rescue to date! Watch for a special blog entry on this little cutie who will likely break our bank (if we had a bank).

So, I'm appealing to you out there to help. If you know of anyone who might be able to help us out, please contact me asap at dollmouse@aol.com or call me at 616 560-0555.

Thanks much!
Carol & Amy

Mom's and Kittens - FOSTER HOMES NEEDED

Hello Feral Friends-

It's so funny how one can say something so ridiculous and then get slapped right in the face with it. When I started TNR in February, I said, I wasn't going to deal with kittens. Gina Marvin kinda laughed at me and said..."Kittens are part of the picture. You WILL have kittens." And she wasn't lying. We HAVE kittens. Right now Amy Pietras and I have 7 moms and a total of 42 kittens in foster care. And we are getting more! And we just lost our major foster home and rehab person, so we are in need of foster care and after surgery rehab space pronto!!

The good news is that Amy is hard at work listing the kittens on petfinder.com (under Jandy's Home) and people are already calling in about them. One little guy (Peter) already has an adoption pending! See our petfinder pets by clicking the link to right of the blog.

We can really use some help with these mom's and kittens. If you are willing to take in a mom and her kittens and give them some space in a spare bedroom or your basement or garage, we really want to talk to you. Please email me at dollmouse@aol.com if you are willing. We have cages or you can let them roam free in a small bedroom.

Here is Pat Baxter's foster Molly and her kittens.
Since taking this photo, Molly is actually fostering
an orphaned kitten that we found abandoned.
What a nice mommy Molly is.
Current count is 3 boys & 3 girls-
One of the girls is orange & white with a grey tiger tail (the adoptee)
and one of the boys is a black & grey tiger.

Great News!!! Angus has been ADOPTED!

Hello Feral Friends!

Super news! Angus, my first rescue from Cedar Springs was adopted! I'm thrilled to report this to all of you who have been with me from the beginning! For those of you who have come in a little later, be sure to read about Angus in the March Blog Archives. He was first mentioned in a post entitled: Horror, Hope and a Second Chance. Angus is probably one of the most bedraggled cats you will ever come across. A huge orange TOM that loved to head butt you! I am so happy for him. Here is a very wonderful email that I received from Andy, one of the kind volunteers at Crash's Landing. I knew Angus was going to be adopted, but hadn't heard it was offical till Andy wrote to me! Thank you Andy for keeping me posted on my dear Angus and Gregory!

This is Andy's email to me:

I imagine you've already heard, but in case you haven't, ANGUS (big orange tom from Cedar) HAS BEEN ADOPTED! I know you felt terrible when you delivered him to Jen back in early March because you thought he was doomed, but the big, beat-up critter made it! It's been a pleasure watching him heal up physically and feel more comfortable & secure. He's been one of my favorites, and I'm going to miss him sitting in my lap, purring loudly, and butting my face with that cement-block head of his, but we're all humungously happy for him.

A short tme later in March, you got Gregory (gray tabby) from the 68th St Burger King. He had gouged the backs of his ears bloody because of ear mites, and you didn't feel it was right to release such an injured cat back into the cruel world. You thought he might have a chance with Crash's. Well, he's going to make it, too. He's still afraid of people and spends most of his time hiding out in a cubby, sometimes snuggled up with another cat. I guess he comes out to eat & use the litter box when no one is around. However, I see him 4 or 5 times a week, & he's gradually getting less shy. His wounds have pretty much healed, & he actually enjoys being petted & rubbed behind the ears, but you have to reach inside the cubby to do it (you have to be a contortionist to get your arm into that floor-level cubby). He's accepted a few belly rubs, and twice he has even come out for a few seconds to get a little food while being petted. Like Angus, he's got a pretty good motor; sometimes when he purrs, it sounds a little like an idling Harley. His flopped-down ears just add to his personality, and one of these days, someone's going to take him home.

-----

For those of you who are interested in learning more about Gregory, visit the March Blog Archives and read the post: Greg - The Big Daddy of them All - LITERALLY!

And if you are interested in adopting Gregory, you can find him listed on petfinder.com under Crash's Landing. There is a link on the right side of the blog that will take you to "Rescued Cats at Crash's Landing and Reuben's Room." if you would like to go there directly.

Our Rescue Kitties are now on Petfinder.com

Hello Feral Friends-

My cat rescue partner Amy Pietras has been hard at work listing the many cats and kittens we have rescued on petfinder.com. We have 6 friendly moms with 3-5 kittens each available for adoption. We also have several sweet cats that we trapped while doing TNR but found to be friendly and not feral. Amy will continue to work her butt off to photograph the cats and kittens and get them listed.

If you are interested in seeing some wonderful cats that need forever homes, please check out the listings on petfinder.com. You can copy and paste this link into your browser:
http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/MI535.html
OR you can use the link right side of the blog to go there directly.

You can learn more about her non-profit organization JANDY'S HOME by visiting the website at: www.jandyshome.org.

Please spread the word to anyone you know who might want to adopt a cat or kitten that has been rescued by Amy or I.

Thanks for reading!

Porch Kitties on Fuller

Hello Feral Friends-

So much has happened in the last two weeks that I can hardly remember details to share with you.

I'll start with a call on 5/21 from a really groovy gal named Diane Yob who initially contacted Vicky's Pet Connection, who was then refered to me and Amy.

Two kittens were stuck in the ceiling of a porch on Fuller Street. They were feral and not having anything to do with anyone who wanted to help them. But they yowled all night long and neighbors were getting concerned for them.

Mom was going up and down and feeding them, but it was pretty imperative that we get them to safety before they hurt themselves trying to get down.

Gabby came over and rigged a platform that extended under the eaves so that we could set a chipmunk trap on it for them to go into. We baited the trap but tied it open so they would get used to going in and out of it. When we had time, we would set the trap to spring and catch the little buggers.

The day following all of this, I got a call at 11pm at night saying that one kitten had tried to jump down and actually fell down and ran under a car parked on Fuller. Diane and Shannon (who I call The Kitten Whisperer) were working to get the baby out from inside the hood. They contacted the owner of the car (a college student named Dave) who we told would not be able to use his car until we had the kitten out. He accepted this fact (just try not to) and was actually willing to have me drive him to and from work the next morning if need be.

At the very same time, two doors down, the other kitten had walked into the trap suspended from the eaves. It was tied up so it didn't spring shut, so when called by the person who rents the duplex, I ran up and stuffed it with towels and Diane and I managed to clip the tie and take the kitten down to safety.

It takes a village....you have heard this one before! And it did. Someone (a genius acutally...not me) had the idea to use large tarps to cover the car completely. With Dave's permission, we did this...though had the poor guy protested, we probably would have anyway. Then we took the trapped sibling and the mother who we live trapped earlier and put them just ouside of the car while still covered with the tarp. We baited another chipmunk trap and waited it out. We waited and waited and waited. Shannon meowed, Diane crawled under the car with a flashlight and we waited some more. Finally after about 2 hours, the kitten went into the trap. Little baby was so light that it didn't spring the trap so I tip toed up to it and sprung it. Mission accomplished...we had our porch kittens!

Diane took mom to C-SNIP the next morning and had her fixed along with a tomcat that lived in the neighborhood and likely was the cause of the kittens! Now mom has recuperated and is back running around the neighborhood, but won't be having anymore babies to leave stranded in porch ceilings.

And the kittens are with Ranger Brenda from Sandy Pines Resort getting socialized! Yes, it takes a village!

Here are pix of the babies getting bathed by Amy Pietras and my neighbor Jonelle Kettman!

God, this sucks!

Amy and a wet, but clean kitten!

Jonelle drying kitten!

Clean kittens who don't appreciate any of the heroics of the "village" that it took to save them!
