After the Montcalm Commissioners Meeting yesterday I was met in the parking lot by Eileen Burr who gifted Carol's Ferals with a box and garbage bag full of cat beds. These comfy and easily washable beds were put together by a team of Greenville and Stanton animal lovers.

Susan Ferrell lets Eileen know what rescue groups can use pet pads.

Ralph Baine placed an ad in the Greenville Daily News for unwanted blankets and material that can be used for bedding.

The materials are passed on to Barbara Bailey and Eileen for sewing.

I would like to thank these fine folks for spending their spare winter hours putting these beds together for me, Lake Haven and HSKC.

What a wonderful thing to do.

This is what I love about RESCUE! Some people can't trap and rehab cats like I do. But some people sew and make cat toys like Rhonda at CAT TOYS FUR EVER. And others who sew and are good at gathering resources do like these fine folks. Everyone does their bit.

While I'm also at it, I'd like to thank Susie and her dear husband for keeping my paypal account receiving bursts of donated funds. Also for making me fantastic beaded necklaces, providing me some internet gift cards and keeping me nourished with South Beach Bars.

To the many folks who reach out to me in even the seemingly smallest of ways.....I APPRECIATE YOU. No kindness goes unappreciated....UNTHANKED and UNRECOGNIZED often...but ALWAYS APPRECIATED.

And to the kind man at the Montcalm Meeting yesterday who put a check in my hand....THANK YOU! And Thank you too for providing the Montcalm Animal Shelter with $300 to buy bowls for the animals to drink from. Currently they are using gerbil type water bottles and none of the animals (understandably) know how to use them...SINCE dogs and cats ARE NOT GERBILS!

Blessings to all who do any kindness for the animals. And for those who profit from their suffering....QUITE THE OPPOSITE!

Why is it a “non-residents” business what the commissioners do in Montcalm County?

The commissioners in Montcalm County have said the only people they want to hear from are the residents of their county. So, I gave some thought to the question,” why is it anyone else’s business?”

It didn’t take me long to recall just a few weeks ago when I got an e-mail from Carol Manos, of Carol’s Ferals And Friendlies, asking me if I would be available to help with a “hoarder clean out.” For those of you not in animal rescue, a hoarder is someone that has more cats than they can care for. Normally, a very well meaning individual that is trying to help out unwanted animals and soon finds themselves in over their heads. This particular situation was a homeowner with originally only one cat. She was 84 years old and had just lost her son. When her out of town family members came to help her get ready to move out of her home they found a situation they never expected. Two years ago a pregnant cat took up residence under the woman’s porch. Being an animal lover, she started feeding the momma, and soon, the babies too. She couldn’t just let them live outdoors, so in they came. The woman did not feel she could in good conscience take the animals to the Montcalm County Animal Shelter because of the “situation” there. She had heard the news about what happened to animals in their care. She knew they could be given to R & R Research. The woman didn’t feel that was a place she could take any cats, which she had become attached to. Surely she could take care of this one litter and hopefully find homes for them. Eventually, the woman had more strays show up. She was unable to afford the spaying and neutering for all of them and the situation became overwhelming. Two years later this one cat and her kittens had blossomed into 45 cats. The family was shocked to find that their Mom, who had just lost her son, was soon going to lose her home and way of life, would also have to grieve the loss of these feline friends. They now had 45 cats to try to deal with, as well as their mother’s care. Their mother still wanted no part of the Montcalm County Animal Shelter, the shelter was getting more bad press and she wanted these cats to find loving homes, not to face an uncertain future at the hands of R & R Researches Jim Woudenberg. The family did some research and felt that The Humane Society of Kent County (HSKC) was their best shot at getting the kind of help they needed. HSKC generously agreed to come in and “clean” out the home of all but 3 cats that the family felt they could properly care for. Of course, they made a call to the Montcalm County Animal Shelter to make sure they weren’t stepping on anyone’s toes. They then marshaled some help from 2 local rescues, Carol Ferals and Reuben’s Room, to catch and transport the 42 remaining cats. Now, at the height of kitten season, HSKC has been flooded with 42 extra cats. The cost of spaying, neutering, testing, vaccinating, housing and then adopting these cats out is no small chunk of change. This is where you can begin to see that what Montcalm County does with their Animal Shelter does have a very real impact on other counties. Citizens in Kent County may not have a vote in Montcalm County but they certainly should have a voice. This is why it is a “non-resident’s” business what commissioners in Montcalm County decide.

The contract will end on August 1st

Then it came down to the vote: The commissioners voted 6 to 3 in favor of ending the contract with R&R Research. Thank God! And thanks the thousands of people world wide who took time to have their voices heard. Thanks to Mike and Jeanne Urbanski for organizing. Thank you Sandy Carlton for fighting this fight for 30 years. Thank you Cheryl McLoud of Lake Haven for having the balls to put Woudenberg's shady dealing on your website. Not totally pleased that the wussy commissioners are giving this maniac till August 1st to be done with the contract. But I guess they gave him a 6 month extension and they have to honor it. WHATEVER! We will have to be super involved in getting all the animals out of there before he gets his mits on them.

I want to add my plea for anyone who can attend to please attend this rally and meeting! After having waged this battle for over 30 years, I can tell you that your presence at the last meeting was vital to getting us this far and we need you to push us over the top at the April 27th meeting.

Some commissioners are holding on tight to keeping the contract. Contrary to what they say about your opinion not counting, they are WRONG! Your voices are being heard and they are making a difference!

There are other reasons we want you to come as well. We would like to thank you in person for ALL you have done and if we should win this, we want you to be there to celebrate this victory which will belong to all of YOU as well as to the animals and residents of Montcalm County. A win in Montcalm will go far to secure an end to pound seizure throughout our state!

Thank you Cat Toys Fur Ever

I had the absolute honor of being contacted by Rhonda Mitchell-Glanzer of Cat Toys Fur Ever last week. She had heard about Carol's Ferals and wanted to supply me with some catnip toys for my adoptables and post-surgical recovering cats.

When I opened the mailer I was overcome with the smell of some primo ganja catnip! I know the cats are gonna be all "Spicoli Eyed" over this good stuff!

Thank you Rhonda for reaching out to the ferals and friendlies that I care for.

You are all gonna love this. Rhonda makes these toys in memory of her beloved Puss Puss. Isn't that a touching tribute. I've not met Rhonda, but she's amazing and I love her kind generous spirit.

Barn Cats Available

Proper Re-Homing of Barn Cats

Because cats typically will try to find their way back to where they came from, they need to be properly re-homed at the new location to minimize stress and better ensure them staying at the new place.

Cats need to be kept in a large cage within the building that they will be calling HOME. Within the cage there needs to be a small towel lined carrier with the door help open with a small bungee cord, a litter box, and food and water bowls. I suggest using clay litter vs clumping as clumping litter turns to sticky mud when it gets wet, making clean up difficult.

When cleaning the cage, scooping litter or refreshing food and water, the cats should be closed into the carrier within the cage. This will allow the person cleaning to do their work without fear of the cats escaping. The mini bungee cord on the inner carrier door will make it possible for the door to stay open so cats can get in and out of the carrier at will when you're not cleaning.

Cats need to stay in the cage for a MINIMUM of 2-3 weeks. Once that time is over, the cage door can be propped open. Food must be kept both inside and outside of the cage. Once the cats leave, they may never want to go back into the cage.

After two more weeks, the cats should be comfortable in the new home and the cage and supplies can be taken away.

Fresh food and water must be made available to barn cats daily. They can not healthfully subsist on a diet of mice alone. They will hunt for sport whether fed or not, so you must feed them nutrient rich cat food to sustain a healthy life.

Post 701 - - Adjustments coming

Feral Friends,

My funding through VPC is going to be limited to only outdoor dwelling cats in Kent County. I will no longer be handling owned animals unless the owners can pay for the surgeries. Anyone wishing to have owned animals fixed via VPC funding will have to go through Bruce's program at ANIMAL HOSPITAL OF LOWELL or through The Spay Neuter Express.

I will only have funding for Kent County cats that will be ear tipped and returned outdoors.

Mother cats and kittens that will be found homes by kind individuals needing reduced prices will also need to go through Bruce and not me.

Bruce's office staff will handle the scheduling of these cats. Those in need of this type of service can call 616.897.8484.

I know things have to be tough for VPC to cut back like this. I'm certain that Kent County cats will still be served well by VPC, but it just won't be me who will be handling them.

I can still fix owned cats that are paid for fully both inside and outside of Kent County. Prices are as follows:

Female spay: $40
Male neuter: $25
Female neuter: (just kidding) but some girls DO have big balls.....take Cheryl McLoud for instance. Have you seen her go after Woudenberg. Gotta love her!!! I digress....

Any free-roaming ferals or strays outside of Kent County will be $40 and $25 as always.

Good news from Oceola County

The following is from the 4/7/09 Minutes from Osceola County, Michigan Board of Commissioners meeting and the Committee of the Whole minutes.. Thought you would all like to see them. MOTION# 3G: Change in Animal Control Policy/Animals for Biomedical Research Rescind the Animal Control policy of allowing animals to go for biomedical research and directed Michelle Kuz, Animal Control Director, to contact Cherryland and respond to an email regarding research. (Note: I think they mean Cheri-Hill) Committee Minutes April 7, 2009 County Policy Regarding Animal Research Animal Control Director, Michelle Kuz, spoke to committee about bio medical research and the use of live animals for such research. She reported that Osceola County is one of only four counties in Michigan to participate in this program. She also reported a proposed House Bill will probably eliminate this practice in Michigan in the future. Michelle told committee members that no animals have been sent out for research since she became director. She has worked diligently on finding homes for the animals. Further discussion was held on whether to change our policy now, or just wait until the House passes the proposed Legislation. Karen Bluhm, County Clerk , reminded Commissioners of email correspondence they had received from an individual concerned about the County’s policy in this matter. Recommendation by Commissioner Brooks, supported by Commissioner Tiedt to rescind the Animal Control policy of allowing animals to go for biomedical research and directed Michelle Kuz, Animal Control Director, to contact Cherryland and respond to an email regarding research. Recommendation was unanimously supported.

Went with HSKC to a home in Montcalm County on Monday. 45 cats were removed. I just picked up 8 males that Dr. Wendy Swift fixed, vaccinated and tested for me. I will post information about them soonly.

Mapleview Animal Hospital offers reduced price S/N

Kitten Fixin' Blitz

We're hosting a Kitten Fixin' Blitz during the upcoming months. For three days a month, beginning in May and continuing through October, we're offering discounted cat and kitten spays and neuters. The discount? 50% off the regular price. Cats and kittens must be between the ages of 3 months and 1 year. In addition, the cats and kittens must be current on their rabies vaccination. Not vaccinated? Not to worry. We're also offering rabies vaccinations for these same surgery patients at $11 for a one year vaccination. Surgeries, along with the rabies vaccinations, are performed by appointment only. The dates for these surgeries are:

Ellen DeGeneres is announcing that, starting today, she is teaming up with eBay to launch an online charity auction to benefit The Humane Society of The United States.
“It’s called, Whatcha Sellin’ Ellen?" she says. "Every week there will be 25 items up for auction. Some things I only wore once. Some twice. And some I slept in. But they’re clean...ish.”
From now until May 8, Ellen will list more than 75 clothing and accessory items from her closet—with 25 new items listed each Tuesday during the series of three weekly online auctions. Rally in Montcalm - April 27th

The commissioners are now getting about 1000 emails a day. These are coming from the following websites: HSUS, PETA, AAVS and CCC. Don't be afraid to send more than one - they are just hitting the delete button anyway. Less than 2 weeks to keep the commissioners feet to the fire! Here is a "Heads Up": MCCAW and CCC are planning a RALLY in front of the Old Court House on April 27 from 11:00 TO 12:00. We will have signs but feel free to bring your own. The tone of the sign is to be POLITE or at least somewhat courteous. The BOC meeting will follow. Hope you can all be there. Please, send this along to those on your list who have ever loved an animal.
