Second Best Sale - This week! And I need a truck!

Anyone have use of a truck to transport some nice stuff from my neighbor's house to Centerpointe mall on Wednesday evening? If it rains, we can push it to Thursday evening.

Included in the move are:
a queen mattress set
two twin mattress sets
three book shelves
a few end tables
and some misc. items.

Items are not so much heavy as they are big.
They won't fit in my hearse.

Anyone wanna give me a hand with this?

The sale will be held at Centerpointe Mall - 3665 28th Street, S.E., Grand Rapids, in the old Secretary of State Office near Menards. Shoppers entrance would be through main mall doors near US Post Office.

We will be accepting donated items on: June 3rd & 4th between 10 am - 8 pm. Items can be dropped off through corridor located around back side of Menards. There will be signs to point you in the right direction.

The actual sale will be held on:
Friday, June 5th - 10 am - 5 pm
Saturday, June 6th - 10 am - 5 pm
Sunday, June 7th - 12 pm - 6 pm

We will accept anything you have that would be appropriate for a rummage sale. Everything including clothing, house wares, books, sports equipment, pet items, toys, furniture,CDs, DVDs, antiques and collectibles! Basically anything!

We will also be collecting hangers, newspaper, plastic bags and paper grocery bags. If you are already having a sale of your own, please consider giving us your left overs. No need to price items. We will take care of that! Please also solicit items from other sales you frequent.

Need a temporary foster home for a friend's cats

Hello Feral Friends-

My good friend Liz of LVNMUZIQ is having to leave her apartment and move in with a friend for a few months.

On Sunday she will need a place to take Luna and Whoopie, her two healthy, spayed female girl cats. They are 7 and 8 years old. One is outgoing. The other shy. All they need is a spare bedroom. Liz will provide food and litter. There will be no cost to the foster family. Of course her cats should be kept separate from your own.

If I had anything other than a cage at Brooknelle, I'd keep them for her myself. She's moving in with Erica who has more cats than she can house at this time as it is. No to mention more than a dozen ferals that she cares for.

Liz needs a place for these cats by Sunday. Please contact her if you can help her.

Nutro Products Announces Voluntary Recall of Limited Range of Dry Cat Food Products

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) -- Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO® dry cat food.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier. An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTRO® dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states, as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel. We are working with all of our distributors and retail customers, in both the US and internationally, to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves. These products should not be sold or distributed further.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile. While we have received no consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO® dry cat food product. Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

Victory for Seals!

While I just stepped into the 30 year fight against the class B dealer in Montcalm in late January, I HAVE been watching and doing some advocacy over the years with regard to the Canadian Seal Hunt.

When I was a little girl, I went to sea world and watched a performing seal named Clyde and fell in love with him. I'm really no longer a fan of performing animal exhibits now that I know better about them, but I was a kid. I was taken to the circus too. OH GOD!

But smitten with Clyde, my folks bought me a seal stuffed animal that I slept with every night of my young life till I was about 13 years old. Clyde Baby (my stuffed buddy) has no "fur" around his neck as my arm around him rubbed it completely thread bare.

My mother's sister, My Aunt Jenny and I called each other "Seal". I can't remember how we came up with it, but I'm guessing it had to do with my toting Clyde Baby with me everywhere I went, including trips to visit her in Chicago.

When I was young, my mother would run doll shows in the upstairs of a bookstore in Royal Oak. I would spend my entire day at the bookstore/giftshop. I spotted some miniature Clyde Baby stuffed animals and begged till my mother bought me one. Over the next year, I amassed another tiny one, a mom and a dad. I loved them and played with them often.

TO MY HORROR, I realized later on that these little stuffed seals were made from REAL SEAL FUR!

It was at that point that I got involved in banning the seal hunt in Canada! I was getting mailings from IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) and pledged money to them before I ever got into rescue or any other kind of advocacy. In college I distributed anti-seal hunting literature around the dorms. A resident assistant asked me to do a talk to the whole dorm/quad, but I was afraid of public speaking so I backed out. Wish I had the chutzpa I have now! I would have talked a blue streak. But you know...with age....comes wisdom.

In any case, the seal hunt has been something I've taken seriously for a long time. This morning I got a fabulous TEXT on my cell from HSUS. The seal hunt will be crippled due to the European Union's ban on seal products. This is a HUGE VICTORY FOR SEALS! Funny how Gabby and I were just talking about seal hunting last night. CRAZY!

The fight to end pound release has been fought and won in many jurisdictions and counties in our state, but nowhere has it been fought longer and met with more resistance than in Montcalm County! And never has any local effort received so much help from so many people from so many parts of Michigan and the entire nation. It not only took a village, it took a movement --- and what a movement it was!!!

Montcalm County Citizens for Animal Welfare (MCCAW) and Concerned Citizens Coalition –Montcalm (CCC) would not have succeeded without the help of the hundreds of people who believed in this cause and helped in any way they could!!!! Michigan Representatives: John Espinosa, Mike Huckleberry, Majority Whip Jeff Mayes and Terry Brown for introducing HB 4663 a bill designed to end pound release and Representative Rick Jones for introducing HB 4263 a bill which would eliminate the use of both CO and CO2 when euthanizing animals. In his book, The Audacity of Hope, Barrack Obama wrote, “The hard cold facts remind me that it was the unbending idealists … who first sounded the clarion for justice and who recognized that power would concede nothing without a fight. It has sometimes been the cranks, the zealots, the prophets, the agitators, the unreasonable that have fought for a new order. The dealer and some of the commissioners have called us those very names. What a compliment!!!!!!

It has been a privilege to have been associated with such a fine group of dedicated, compassionate people who are not afraid to stand up and fight for justice. Thank you for joining our crusade and standing with us. YOU MADE THIS HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!

We know our work is not done. R & R’s contract remains in effect until August 1, even though no one can tell us how and why a 6 month contract was signed by Chairman Carr. There are still many problems with the shelter and details concerning other aspects of the Animal Control Ad Hoc Committee recommendations need to be worked out. However, we have cleared one gigantic hurdle and, after resting up, we will resume our mission to insure humane treatment of the animals in the care of our county’s animal control.

All of our efforts have allowed us to join the elite group of people who can truly say “We have made a difference!!!!!!”

SECOND BEST SALE to benefit Carol's Ferals

Carol's Ferals can use your unwanted items of value to sell at a SECOND BEST SALE. All proceeds of this sale will Benefit Carol's Ferals.

The sale will be held at Centerpointe Mall - 3665 28th Street, S.E., Grand Rapids, in the old Secretary of State Office near Menards. Shoppers entrance would be through main mall doors near US Post Office.

We will be gratefully accepting donated items on: June 3rd & 4th between 10 am - 8 pm. Items can be dropped off through corridor located around back side of Menards. There will be signs to point you in the right direction.

The actual sale will be held on:
Friday, June 5th - 10 am - 5 pm
Saturday, June 6th - 10 am - 5 pm
Sunday, June 7th - 12 pm - 6 pm

We will accept anything you have that would be appropriate for a rummage sale. Everything including clothing, house wares, books, sports equipment, pet items, toys, furniture,CDs, DVDs, antiques and collectibles! Basically anything!

We will also be collecting hangers, newspaper, plastic bags and paper grocery bags. If you are already having a sale of your own, please consider giving us your left overs. No need to price items. We will take care of that! Please also solicit items from other sales you frequent.

Schuleit (of the Ad Hoc Committee). I hope this will dispell the
rumors going around about Montcalm County selling it's own animals to
research. Thank you for a "heads up". Please send on to anyone who may

Dear Jeanne,
Thank you for your efforts to dispell the rumors you mention in the
attached message. Following are the recommendations we provided to
the Board of Commissioners.

These recommendations, which address how animals would be
dispositioned, were developed with help form Allie Phillips, Director
of Publlic Policy for American Humane Association. They were based on
the exemptions in bill 4663. A copy of the bill is attached.


Disposition



Reclamation is best. The most desirable alternative is to return pets
to their owners.


Adoption. When owners cannot be found, every effort should be made to
adopt the animals into a new home.

Rescue. If either reclamation or adoption are not achieved, rescue
groups are available and willing to help find a new home for the
animals. Rescue is just as desirable as adoption.

Life Saving Medical Alternatives. When the first three alternatives
are not possible, House Bill 4663 allows for life saving alternatives
that meet specific criteria. This does NOT fall into a category of
experimentation. These include the following, but have not been
initiated at this point by Montcalm County : In all three of these
instances, the animals do not suffer, and are given the opportunity to
be adopted into a good home. In the end, the animals are alive,
comfortable, and more adoptable. There is no cost for the care, since
veterinary students are performing the procedures under supervision of
licensed veterinary faculty. We understand that some colleges will
provide the transportation.

Ø Animals in need of spay/neuter may be utilized by veterinary
students as part of their training. In this instance, a veterinary
school such as Michigan State may pick up the animal, transport them
to the university and perform the spay/neuter as part of veterinary
training. The animal will be more adoptable and will be returned to
the shelter, where efforts can be made to find a home.

Ø Animals in need of veterinary medical or surgical care may
receive care at a veterinary school as part of the training program.
If a family cannot afford needed medical care for their animal, they
may bring it to Animal Control, and a veterinary college such as
Michigan State can pick up the animal. The animal will be treated and
then returned to the shelter in a more "adoptable" state. Stray
animals may also be treated in this manner.

Ø Use of animal's blood for blood bank purposes. Occasionally,
animals need donated blood, much like humans, because of medical
conditions or surgery. In this case, the bill allows for blood to be
taken from donor animals, after which the animals are adopted out.


In addition to the above, the following may be considered by an owner
whose pet needs to be euthanized:

Ø Educational Memorial Programs: Just as medical schools use
human cadavers to teach human anatomy, veterinary schools use canine
and feline cadavers to teach anatomy of animals. Cadavers, whether
human or animal, are also helpful for teaching the psychomotor skills
necessary for developing surgical competence. In these programs,
clients donate their deceased animals to a veterinary school. This
would be at the owners discretion.

Humane Euthanasia
We understand that we cannot save every animal and that not all
animals are appropriate for adoption. Humane euthanasia will be used
as a last resort. Humane euthanasia by intravenous injection is
recommended by the committee. Euthanasia techniques will be subject
to ongoing evaluation by the two advisory boards to assure that state
of the art, humane, standards of care are observed.

Legislation

Two bills now introduced by Michigan House Representatives. This is
the kind of legislation that makes people in Lansing feel good. It is
inevitable that this is GOING to happen. We need to be ready for it.
HSUS has just appointed a representative for Michigan , who is coming
from Minnesota , where she wrote the bill.

We have the opportunity to do something that is proactive, something
that will distinguish Montcalm County as a leader, and as a model for
the other counties.

When we all work together, great things can be accomplished. This is
an opportunity for the Board of Commissioners to lead the way and do
something great for our county, our citizens, and our animals. This
is a WIN-WIN-WIN.
