Return to Cedar Springs

I'm BAAAACCCCCKKKK!!!!!

I ventured back into Cedar Springs last night. I had a few calls over the past months from people who wanted their cats fixed. I had their names written on a piece of paper that was plaguing my desk for months. Then yesterday when I decided to take a trip NORTH, I looked for the paper and couldn't find it ANYWHERE! Figures!!!!

Luckily for me, I kept records and remembered some details and was able to seek out the three cats who needed to be fixed!

I picked up a female cat from a gal who didn't want her fixed last fall because she thought she was too young. Luckily she didn't have kittens yet. Victory! And I also picked up two boys from another gal who is the niece of a lady who's boy I neutered in September. And get this....she is actually paying for her boys to be neutered!!! This is the first person in the park to actually pay for their own cat to be fixed (besides my dear friends, Sharon and Sandy). I was blown away! She keeps her cats indoors only and I won't have to ear tip them, like all the rest.

When I was shuffling cats around in the van, another gal whose two cats I fixed in the fall came over to me and asked if I could fix her new cat. "Of course" was my reply. I'll pick her up when I drop off the three that are being fixed this morning.

I also set some traps at Sharon and Sandy's place and got two cats who were not previously ear tipped! BINGO!

It was very satisfying driving around the park and seeing cats with ear tips. These cats would have surely multiplied by now and the park would be overrun with kittens!

I asked several people if they knew of any kittens in the park and I all I heard was NO! I handed out cards and told them to call me if they saw any!

I fixed over 90 cats in that park last year and I'm seeing the payoff. NO KITTENS!

I'll return tonight and set more traps and do all I can to keep the park's cat population under control. It's my little corner of the world and I feel that my work has made a significant difference there. I think we got rid of the Feline Leukemia problem too. Life is good!

Now, if we could just get gas prices to go down, that would make my month!!!! Seems the gas prices go up in direct correlation with my foray into Cedar Springs. Last fall when I was in the park HARDCORE, gas was $3.18 per gallon. When it breaks $3.00 I'll pee my pants! Donations for wee-wee pads and gas can be made by logging onto paypal.com and sending money to me at dollmouse@aol.com.

Thank You Sue Carl

Thank you Sue Carl!

God, I love you! I remember when I just began writing this blog. You were the first person who I knew that was actually reading it. You were even printing it off and archiving it. That really made my day. I still am not sure who is reading this thing, but I think there are a few people who frequent it and it makes me really happy. Even if nobody reads it, writing is cathartic for me. It's like keeping a diary. But not hiding it under your pile of Tiger Beat Magazines!

Back to why I love you Sue! You came on my first trapping mission in Cedar Springs. Well, actually it was my second. The first one I was sent in solo and scared shitless. You accompanied me on tour of duty #2 and we rounded up a half dozen cats who have all gone to Crash's Landing with most being adopted into loving homes.

YOU dished out smelly mackeral for me! That's probably the best thing you could have done, cuz it kept me from gagging during that particular foray into hell.

I have enjoyed our time together at C-SNIP fund-raisers. Manning that hole at the golf outing last year was so fun for me. Can't wait for the next one!

Thank you for your continued monetary donations to my mission. You really have been a great support both financially and mentally!

YOU ROCK!

Pet Food Recall - God Help Us!

PET FOOD RECALL UPDATE: WHAT EVERY PET PARENT SHOULD KNOW
As the pet food recall widened last week to include certain products containing rice protein concentrate, the ASPCA has issued new recommendations for pet parents looking for advice on what to feed their pets. “As new products are recalled, there is obviously great confusion in the public space about what is and is not safe to feed your pet,” says the ASPCA’s Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine, Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. “We’ve prepared some guidelines that we hope will be helpful to pet parents and veterinarians alike.”

ASPCA experts suggest the following:

- Based on information made public by the FDA last week, the ASPCA recommends that you should not feed your pet any foods containing wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate.

- Given that the source of contamination has thus far been identified as coming from outside the U.S., you may wish to check with your pet food manufacturer as to the country of origin of any protein concentrate used in its products.

- If you suspect at any time that your pet has ingested food that may be contaminated, call your veterinarian immediately.

- Stay alert for early signs of a problem that may be recall-related, such as excessive thirst, decreased appetite or vomiting.

- If you think your pet is critically ill and you cannot reach your regular veterinarian, please call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Please check the ASPCA Pet Food Recall Resource Center regularly for additional information, including updates about foods that were added to the list of recalled products yesterday.

Why do you think I love this man?

This is Mark. He called me to help him with a cat and a kitten last summer. Maybe you remember Patches, the black and white kitty who needed her eye removed. Well, he adopted Patches and her kitten and gave them both a nice indoor home life.

But that's not why I LOVE THIS MAN! I love this guy because when he was a police officer (before he retired), he gave Ted Nugent a big fat speeding ticket! Any of you who have known me for any time at all, know how much I despise Ted Nugent. So when I learned that Mark actually slapped him with a hefty fine, it totally made my day!

Thanks Mark!

Updates

Monday started off to be a good day then it all when to hell in a hand basket once I returned to Brooknelle with 5 of Aruds Purdy's cats from Sparta.

I'd already cleaned the other 5 cats and I had nearly all of the new five cats situated in their cages and was preparing to open their carriers and then it happened. I did a stupid thing! I don't take the blame on my own stupidity usually and I really don't think I deserve it here, but nobody else was there, so I have to....RIGHT?

I had to put a little divider between cages because the way things landed, I had a litter box adjacent to another cage's food. I usually run cardboard between the cages but I didn't do it yet since all the cats so far have been from Ardus' colony. I figured leaving the cages open to neighbor view would be comforting to the cats who were practically all litter mates. So rather than breaking down the huge boxes that I picked out of my neighbor's trash, I spied a piece of glass shelving (or something) and I thought....PERFECT. I'll just run it between these two cages to protect the food from the litter. The cats will still be able to see each other. What could be better!

Well, let me tell you....it would have been A LOT better if the glass hadn't just so slightly tapped the bar of the cage and BROKE INTO A MILLION TINY PIECES! Seems the glass was "tempered" and when it hit it's fracture point it just falls to pieces. So one minute I'm holding a piece of 2 ft by 3 ft glass then the next minute I'm picking a sliver of glass from my finger and the entire garage space is covered in gravel like glass fragments. I'm standing in my flip flops trying not to have a panic attack because 1) I'm phobic of broken glass and cutting myself and 2) the gravel glass is in every water bowl, food bowl and litter box. And Gina has just left and I'm there all alone!!!!

The glass shot to every corner of the garage and it's now making a crackling sound as each small piece breaks into three more. So there I am, standing in a heap of glass and every cat is looking at me like "what the #$%&!"

I almost start crying cuz it was a good day but a LONG day and I wanted to get home and sit down in front of the tube and veg out for 15 minutes before passing out! But alas, that wasn't meant to be!

So I start by shaking the glass off my feet and am relieved to find that it isn't the super sharp kind of glass that you might find when a mirror or drinking glass shatters. Thank you Jesus!
I tip toe around and close each cat in it's carrier and remove the ones from the cages where the glass was heavy.

Then I proceed to clean out every cage, throw out every bit of freshly placed litter and food, sweep, sweep and sweep again. I check each carrier to make sure none got in with the cats. I'm thankful that none of these particular residents are super fractious because I'm sticking my hand in each carrier and feeling for any gravel glass.

Finally, I get the place cleaned up to my satisfaction, all the cat are clean, fresh and safe and I go home!

It's time to medicate Dizzy Gillespie and the kittens. They are on clavamox to finish off their URIs. So I go into the garage expecting Dizzy to come running up to me but HE DOESN'T. For the first time, he isn't running up to me! I check his bed (sometimes he sleeps really soundly and doesn't wake when I open the door). No Dizzy! I check his usual hiding spot. No Dizzy! I begin to panic. What if I spaced out and didn't lock him in his cage before opening the door to put my trash can back in? What if someone came by to pick something up and didn't see the "Free Roaming Dizzy" sign on my door and let him out? I'm about to puke!

I set traps inside the garage and outside on my porch. Then I try not to cry and I go about my other chores.

I swear, I must have gone to the door a dozen times to call for him. I was soooo hoping to see him in the trap. But I didn't.

I'm my father's daughter so my worry is escalating at an alarming rate. I call Arlene (my neighbor who comes in daily to take care of the kittens and others) and she tells me that Dizzy hadn't come out for her when she was at the house at 6pm. GREAT!

My sweet, little cockeyed Dizzy is loose in my neighborhood for probably hours and hours and there is no sign of him.

UNTIL....I peek out into the garage again and see that the trap is closed but no cat is in it. Temporary relief. The trap can't have closed on it's own. It must have been bumped. As far as I know, I didn't let a possum in, so it must be Dizzy. Then I notice something else out of place. I'm getting a glimmer of hope here!

Then, SWEET RELIEF! Dizzy walks out from around a stack of boxes! I breathe for the first time in two hours!

Dizzy gets his medicine and I put him in his cage for the night! I go to sleep and don't have nightmares of Dizzy being hit on the Beltline!

So the next day, I go to wake up Dizzy and I'm calling for him and calling for him but he's sleeping soundly and not waking up. I finally realize it! DIZZY IS DEAF! When he awakes on his own, he comes right to the front of the cage to be released from his temporary prison.

I throw things across the garage that make noise but he doesn't turn to look at them. Confirmation...DIZZY IS DEAF.

Today I found him in the garage turned away from me, screaming his head off for attention. I'm standing right behind him, SCREAMING MY HEAD OFF calling for him and he has no idea I'm there. It's conclusive....DIZZY IS DEAF!

Well, there are worse things in life. I think he may have been the only friendly one of the bunch because he was never scared or startled! Which is lucky for him. Because it has lead him to be taken in by me and now he will go to a good home and he won't have to live in a barn!

So is being DEAF a bad thing? NOPE....NOT FOR DIZZY!

: ) Carol

PS A couple who saw Dizzy at Gina's adoption event last Saturday liked Dizzy but wanted an indoor/outdoor cat to mouse their pole barn. Of course, the answer was no since I don't adopt out to people who put cats outside. BUT I do still have a bedroom full of anti-social Operation Agnes cats and those are perfect for mousing in a pole barn. So tonight, I'm taking the two friendliest (but still skittish) to Tara and Dan's place for re-homing! Yeah! for Sigsbee and Fry!
If you remember from Anita's letter, Sigsbee and Fry were friends and they would always come to eat together. So they will go to a new home and be together for the rest of their natural lives. Yeah!

Good morning Dizzy!!!

Thank You Stephanie

Thank you my dear sweet Stephanie. Your very generous donation will go right to what you intended. Stephanie is a devoted volunteer of Crash's Landing and has been working with cats for years and years. I met her a few months ago and she has been wonderful about keeping up on my antics via my blog.

Today she sent me a paypal donation to purchase some stuff to organize my new TNR space at Brooknelle. I love to keep neat and organized. I don't function well in chaos and neither does she apparently. So I will honor Stephanie's donation and use it to buy some of those hinged stacking tubs to house food and litter. I also need a few other things to better organize the space so that's where I will use this particular donation since it was intended for this purpose.

Thanks Steph! It will be nice to work out of bins vs bags. I really feel like I'm coming up in the world! My operation has been on such a shoestring since I began in February of 2005. I will continue to be thrifty so that I can put all my own money into the care of the cats, but when I get great donations like yours, I'll use them for whatever purpose the person donating wishes.

Anyone wish to send me some money to go on vacation?

: ) Have a groovy day!

Help Me Help VPC!!

Well, you all know it, but I want to say it again...without Vicky's Pet Connection, there would be no Carol's Ferals. Vicky and Nancy not only turned me onto Dr. Langlois who has been invaluable to my rescue, but they also pay for all of my feral and stray spay/neuters through him. I'm sure I'd be doing some sort of rescue, but I can't imagine having to do all the running, paying rent at Brooknelle, feeding, housing and medicating cats AND being able to afford the surgeries. Thank you VPC for all you do to help me and the animals of Kent County.

Please help me help VPC by taking part in these very simple fund raising activities.

When you help VPC, you help me!!!

Operation "Sick Cats Locked In A Barn" - UPDATE

FINALLY!!!!

Dr. Langlois came by early last week (very early...7am) and assessed my barn cats. I was worried cuz some of them still sounded a little congested. Bruce assured me that the cats will always have a little of that being they were so sick and he recommended I return them. What a relief. I was beginning to think I'd have these cats forever!!

Erin (my wonderful new volunteer who I call Mini-Me cuz she is so much like me....which is why I adore her!) came with me to ready the barn and release the cats. When we arrived, we found the barn cleared of all the sick, nasty hay and a fresh layer was made available for the cats to climb on and bed in. I knocked down bales and Erin build a nice pyramid staircase up to the loft.

Then it was time to open carriers and sing "Born Free". A few shot right out, but many didn't leave the carrier that they called home for the past 30 days. Finally as I was in the house explaining to the old woman that the cats were back and going to stay (which she didn't dig at first, but did once I got done with her), the last of them ran out and shot straight up the haystack "stairway to heaven" and was once again comfortable in his home.

It was a great day. Yesterday I went back and returned two other cats that were fixed but not related to the farm cats and one farm cat named Elise who I wanted to hang on to for a few more days to get her over her wheezy breathing. When I arrived, I saw that the cat door to the barn was open and the cat were for the first time allowed out of the barn. Some had been born in there and never seen the light of day. April (the home health aide of the elderly farm owners - who took 3 of the less feral cats home to live with her) said that in the evening they come out roam, and return to the barn. Yeah! Freedom! What good is it being a feral cat if you can't ROAM for goodness sake!

So that was a good end to a extremely busy week.

On Thursday when I had Erin helping me, I blew off a mammogram and an appointment with my financial adviser guy. Health and wealth stops cold when there is someone willing to scrub month old cat dookie off cages! Thank you Erin for all your help this week. I would never have been able to do it without you!

People are calling about Cheyenne's babies and I will be starting to show them off this coming week! I'm a little saddened that nobody wants Mama and that I may have to release her. But if I do, she will at least go back to Linda Sanchez who will feed and shelter her. If you know anyone who wants a shy kitty, please contact me!!!! Everything will work out as it will...as it's meant to be. I'm getting this from Gina who takes pretty much all her cat rescue work in stride and has been invaluable in keeping me from going out of my mind!

Life is good!

Brooknelle & recent TNR activities!

Hello Feral Friends-

It's been such a busy couple of weeks. James, my amazing handy man friend/GOD worked diligently last week getting the duct work and plumbing run to the two garage units of Brooknelle. I'm happy to report that we have a utility sink with running water. James was also kind enough to run water into Amy's adoption center so Jandy's Home has a sink now too! A sink makes a big difference to a girl when she accidentally runs her hands into some fresh cat poop!

My most amazing and wonderful volunteer/friend/goddess Erin helped me last week with several projects, but one was dismantling my garage cages, power washing the hell out of everything and taking them to Brooknelle for set up of my TNR operations there.

Erin also helped me return the cats that were in my garage for the past month. More about them in the next post. In addition to this, she came out to Ardus Purdy's house and assisted me in transporting 5 cats that couldn't resist some moist Friskies food!

Last week was a really great week. I got 11 cats fixed. The sick farm cats took up all my TNR space so I was stopped dead in my tracks with respect to rehabbing in my garage. Thankfully Gina stepped in and allowed me to do rehab at her place for that month, so I was able to knock out Corky Oswald's colony plus start on one at the home of Norma & Linda.

Right now, the only cat in my garage is Dizzy Gillespie, but he's going to The Focus on Ferals Adoption Event today and I KNOW HE WILL BE ADOPTED! He's so adorable!!

Life is pretty good. I feel like I actually have a handle on things.

Now if I could just find some barn homes for Agnes' cats! In time...everything in time!

Have a groovy weekend!

Thank you Darla

A very special thank you to my dear, sweet Darla Alexander for making a donation to my rescue work! Darla, you are the greatest. First of all, You suggest I put paypal link on the blog, then you use it to make a donation yourself! YOU ROCK! Thank you so much!

I'm touched by the kindness of known friends and unknown friends who have extended themselves by sending me money. Let me tell you folks, it sure goes to good work. Every penny that is donated keeps me rolling toward helping reduce this exploding overpopulation of cats in the Grand Rapids area.

I hope to be able to do it for a long, long time. With help from people Darla I'll be able to! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

If you would like to donate, here's the paypal link:

Thank you Vicki, Victoria and VICKY!

My dear friend Darla Alexander suggested I put a paypal button on the blog so that folks who wanted to make a donation could do so with ease. So far, I have received two donations! I was thrilled to pieces to find and email and donation from Vicki LaVerdiere Nixon (Michigan & Wisconsin Team Leader for Small Paws Rescue). Vicki donated to my "Sponsor a Hell House Cat" plea last spring. This time, she made a donation to help support Cheyenne and her kittens!

THEN....I got another donation via paypal from a woman named VICTORIA. Funny huh....two Vicki's (or forms of Victoria). We have never met but she read my blog and found my cause worthy of a donation, so I found money in my paypal account from her too. The coolest thing is that somehow we got on the subject of ethnenticity and come to find out...Victoria is a fellow Greek! How awesome is that?

THEN.........I get a call from Vicki of Vicky's Pet Connection responding to my plea for cages for the new TNR rehab facility at Brooknelle. She and Nancy came through fast as lighting for me as usual. VPC has been unbelievable in helping me. Not only do they pay for all of my feral spay/neuters, they hooked me up with Dr. Langlois (which is nothing short of the greatest gift you can give a rescuer) but they also have given me countless carriers and crates and sent donated cages my way whenever they crossed their path.

Look at how three V's can make a girls day and help a lot of cats!

Even if you name isn't Vicki or any form of it, you can help too!

Just press this button, go to paypal.com and make a donation to dollmouse@aol.com.

: ) Thanks -

Pet Food Recall - A pretty good listing!

Hello Feral Friends-

While I'm thrilled to hear from people wanting to adopt kittens, I'm saddened by some of the reasons. Yes, I have noticed people looking for new additions to their fur family due to the loss of a beloved cat. And a few have actually been losses of pets due the the recalled food.

Here is the latest list. It looks pretty comprehensive but one can't ever be sure. Safe to say, if you have any of this food, don't feed it to your pets. We can only hope more foods are not added to this list.

Cheyenne, Raleigh, Salem & Tulsa - NEED HOMES!

Hello, my name is Cheyenne. I used to have a home and enjoyed a nice life. But my owner threw me out leaving me to fend for myself. A kind woman fed me and gave me shelter. But three months ago, I was in heat and a tom cat got a hold of me and I found myself in the family way. I didn't plan to have children as I'm way to young for such things, but alas, here I am. I have three babies. Raleigh and Salem are boys. Their adorable little sister is named Tulsa. Carol named us all after US cities.

I am a little shy and need some time to get more used to being in a home. I've been homeless for much of my short life. I am hoping that you will adopt my babies and perhaps consider me too.

The little whipper snappers were only a month old on March 20th, so they can't leave Carol's place until they are big enough to get shots and be fixed. I will also be fixed once they are weaned. Even though I didn't set out to have a family, I'm a great mom and Carol knows it's important to keep Raleigh, Salem and Tulsa with me until they are healthy enough to make it on their own (typically when they are two months old).

If you are interested in adopting me or one of my kittens, or me and all of my kittens, or a couple of my kittens, please contact Carol via email at dollmouse@aol.com. Be sure to tell her a little about your home situation and why you think you would be a good caregiver for us. She really likes to hear about the people who are wanting to adopt us so she can make sure we have the best chance at a long, happy life.

Our adoption fee is $50 each and it includes spay/neuter, feline leukemia and FIV testing, relevant shots to our age and de-worming and flea preventative.

Contact her to pre-adopt us with a small deposit.

**** Carol will take all email (dollmouse@aol.com) and phone (616 560-0555) requests to see us, but the final decision as to who will be adopting us will take time as she is going to be sure that Mama Cheyenne finds a home as well. The neighborhood that we came from is full of sick cats and she can't in good conscious release a friendly cat back to that area. So once someone steps up and adopts Cheyenne on her own or with a kitten, she will hold all final adoption decisions.

Little Tulsa looking up at me!

Salem entering his condo.

Good morning, time to wash up!

It looks safe to leave the condo. I want some of this grub!

Babies are eating soft food now.
Caregiver Carol, Arlene and Mama Cheyenne get a little break from feeding.

To Declaw or Leave Clawed....That is the Question!

When I was a kid, we had our cat Pyewackette front paw declawed. We even let her go outside that way. Stupid!

When Pyewackette passed away in 1990, I took in an adult Show-shoe Siamese named Baby. She was already an adult and a big girl at that. She had her claws and I didn't have the heart to declaw her. I didn't have a scratching post for her so she destroyed my "first apartment" brand new furniture. Merciful, but stupid on my part for not giving her something more appropriate to scratch.

I had to have my dear Baby euthanized in 1994 because she got really sick after I moved to Grand Rapids. Gabby and I answered an ad in The Press for "two cats...free to good home". Trixie and Socks came into my life. Both were 4 paw declawed. I purchased nice furniture and had a good run for a while. (except Socks was a chronic vomiter and liked to use my couch as a toilet). You can't have it all!

Then in 1999 a tiny little black fluff ball walked in front of my car while on route to a friend's house in the country. Spooky came home with me and was my first black cat. I had always wanted a black cat! He was the first cat I ever got to name, all the others were named for me or by previous owners. It was Halloween and I thought the name was appropriate though something a kid would come up with. I believed I had to keep a level playing field, so I had Spooky 4 paw declawed. Cruel!

I have since learned that declawing is not a necessity. While I don't disparage anyone who does it and I actually have been very vocal about defending Jen at Crash's Landing for declawing her residents (because it is her experience that they adopt out more easily and she only does front paws and that's on a case by case basis at that), I surely would not recommend a 4 paw declaw and I try my best not to adopt cats out to people who will declaw them at all. I feel that if it's the only way I can get the cat into a home, I will allow a front paw declaw. But if there are other people interested in the cat (who believe otherwise), I'll adopt to them first. Such was the case of Octavia, Portia and Quinn. Several people were interested in these youngsters. But half of the perspective adopters were planning on declawing front or front and back paws. I found homes where the cats will be happy and keep their nails in tact. I drove to Lansing to ensure this for Portia and Quinn.

I do not declaw my cats. Buzzby, Morgan, Toby and Monkey all have their claws. I have several scratching posts and have no problem with any of them...EXCEPT MONKEY! Monkey scratches everything! It's a little late for my couches and my stereo speakers, but I have safeguarded the rest of the furnishings by getting SOFT CLAWS NAIL CAPS. I had them put on when Dr. Langlois had him "under" for a dental cleaning. They stay on for about a month and then when the nail sheath comes off they are shed along with it. All I have to do is wait till he is sleeping, then I sneak up on him and apply a new one. I probably could have applied them all myself one or two at a time, but I hadn't thought of that initially.

The SOFT CLAWS come in a variety of colors and sizes. Chow Hound sells them for $19.99 for a package of 40. You only need to put the tips on the front claws, so that works out to 4 full sets for 20 bucks!

They are simply glued on with crazy glue. The package comes with two tubes and some application tips that make application easier, but not necessary. I'm finding that I will have to get some more glue before I run out of tips. No problem.

Here are pix of Monkey playing with his favorite toy with his big blue nails. I think he looks very handsome. I love my boy and weighing in at 13 lbs, I'd never want to declaw him. He loves to hug me and kneed my neck and shoulders when he does. Now he can do it without hurting me. Life is good for all of us. Please consider Soft Paws, getting a good tall scratching post and putting plastic tape on your furniture before trucking your baby in to have his claws removed. There are options out there.

Jean & Her Feral Boy

Hello Feral Friends-

I have a good story to tell you. The other night, I'm soaking the cat smells off me in my bubble tub and I'm multi-tasking as usual having my daily talk with Gina.

I get a call coming through which I ignore cuz I'm sure it's a cat call and I like to let those go thorough to my voice mail when possible. She says, was it a ___ number? I say "Yes...did you get the same call?". Gina replies "Yes". So it's confirmed....a cat call.

The next day I call back this woman named Jean who has been feeding a big orange tom cat for several years. Seems the old boy had gotten himself trapped in her garage and with this "easy to trap situation", she wants to catch him and have him neutered.

She is happy to pay for his surgery, have him tested for felv/fiv and get all his shots. I'm praising the lord for her because while many people want to help cats, few are willing to shell out major money for them.

I talk to Jean some more and learn that she works for the post office and actually knows Gina (since Gina is a letter carrier). Small world. So Jean picks up a trap from Gina and gets her big old boy into it the next day. Jean is worried that the recent hair loss around her boy's head and neck is ringworm. Gina and she look closely at the cat.

Gina recognizes the cat! The cat has an ear tip! She goes through her records and finds that she trapped this cat a month ago across Kalamazoo street as part of a larger scale TNR project.

Jean is relieved to find that the hair loss is NOT ringworm, but rather where Gina had him shaved while under anesthesia to determine if his wounds were active or healed.

It was curious to Jean where he went for a few days last month when he didn't come to her home for his daily feeding. Well, he was at Gina's recuperating from his surgery!

So....Gina took the boy and was going to have him tested and vaccinated for Jean. I actually took him in to Dr. Langlois yesterday. Since he was already neutered (by Gina last month), he just needed his blood drawn and vaccines. Because Bruce didn't want HIS OWN BLOOD DRAWN....he put the cat in a plastic chamber and gassed him down to sedate him. Blood was drawn and he was found to be FIV positive. NOT the worst case scenario...Feline Leukemia would have been a worse result, but FIV is not good for ferals. Even with a caregiver, allowing him roam the streets would pose a risk to HIM because he can be exposed to many other sick cats and with his suppressed immune system, he could latch onto any sort of disease with ease. And if he were to fall ill, and not be able to make it back to Jean's place, he would suffer and die without the benefit of having someone humanely euthanize him.

So, Gina broke the news to Jean who immediately came to her house to pick up her boy. She took him home and is keeping him in her garage until he can have his vaccines boostered. During this time, she is building an enclosed screened area off her back door where he can live and her cats can come out to visit him through the cat door she will have installed. Seems her cats and he get along well. AND, if he wants to one day, he can come into the house through the same door and he will be welcome!

This is a great story isn't it? But this isn't the WHOLE story.

Gina's protocol is that if she feels a cat might be sick with FIV or FELV, she has it tested. After fixing so many cats, she gets a "feeling" and she's usually right. If the feral cat tests positive for either disease, she will do the humane thing and have it euthanized.

For some reason, she didn't have this boy tested when she trapped him last month. I asked her why...he was a big old tom....had obviously been in lots of fights....would be a very likely candidate for FIV.

She said, that he just didn't strike her as having it. Which was nothing short of divine intervention as far as I'm concerned. Had she gotten the "feeling" and tested him, she would have put him down...never knowing that he had a loving caregiver out there who would be missing him and who would go to such great lengths to help him with his special circumstances.

Because she didn't test him the first time around, he returned to Jean and luckily got trapped in the garage and now is going to have a protected, perfect life.

Tell me there isn't guardian angels watching out for cats.

Both up above and on the ground....like Jean....who solidifies our faith that people do care. There are many good and loving people out there who like Gina and I, have a special place in their hearts for "the forgotten ones".

It's snowing in Grand Rapids....And it's three days before Easter!

When I was a kid it snowed on Easter Sunday. My mother went out and built a snow bunny. Basically a two level snowman with tall rabbit ears. She put plastic daffodils all around it.

Now, it's snowing in Grand Rapids. And we only have three days till Easter. I'm not thrilled that my spring flowers that have peeked out of the ground did it too early, but that is mother nature I guess.

But in honor of my mother who built me a snow bunny and the late winter weather, I give you this:

Copy and paste this url into your web window and look for the snowflake with the arrow pointing to it!

Thanks Gabby for sending this my way!

Happy Wintery Easter to you all!

Great News!!!

Penelope jumping for joy upon learning
that she was going to be going to a forever home!

Hello Feral Friends-

Today, Penelope done got herself adopted!

She will be sharing a home with two very nice humans named Lindsey and Drew. Lindsey works in promotions and Drew is a student at GVSU. Though catless this morning, Lindsey has had cats all her life and was waiting till she got an apartment with Drew to add a cat to her family. She wanted to get an adult cat because she understands that older cats have a harder time finding forever homes. I immediately fell in love with them.

I interviewed Lindsey via phone and told her that if she was serious about adopting Penelope that she should bring a carrier to take her home in....assuming they passed muster when arrival.

Well they did and once they met Penelope, the brand new pink carrier was brought in to take her home. They also bought a matching litter box, bowl set and all the fun stuff a cat would want.

Penelope has been the ambassador to the cat room and she will be missed. I'm hoping that Piper will step up and take her place in this important role. So far, it's funny cuz Joe is coming out of his shell and will come out of hiding when I enter the room. Yeah!

I'm thrilled that Penelope has a home now! Lucky kitty!

Return to Brooknelle

Well, I soon to be back at Brooknelle. Last summer, as you all know, I set up and operated Jandy's Home Adoption Center located at The Brooknelle Pet Resort. It was a major undertaking but I am proud to say that I was able to give it a good start and now it's a thriving adoption center for Amy to find homes for lots and lots of cats and kittens.

I left my work at Jandy's Home last fall because I was unable to devote the time necessary to TNR. Watching out for 30 cats and kittens took so much of my time that my own rescue work suffered. Since returning to TNR in the fall, I've fixed over 200 cats and kittens....so leaving was the right thing to do.

Well, now it seems that I'll be returning to the scene of the crime (sorta speak). The electricians who rented the other three bays of the garage/office area moved out leaving this very wonderful piece of property available to Gina Marvin and I.

I about peed my pants with happiness when Gina told me the news last week. Of course we talked to Dr. Langlois and negotiations were immediately underway and now we have been promised the space.

Today I'll meet James (of Mike Welch and James' Hobo Home Repair). We will discuss the installation of heating/cooling vents and plumbing so that we can have a utility sink in the place! Which beats the hell out of lugging dirty litter boxes to and from my house.

I'll be using my portion of the space for TNR. This will get the cats out of my garage, enabling me to park my vehicle under a roof for the first time in a year. I'm thrilled because I plan to have a fund raising rummage sale this summer and I will be able to use the garage for that purpose.

The space will also enable Gina and I to store some of our equipment and house ferals who are awaiting barn homes or going to other rescue programs. The use of the remaining space is still up in the air.

It's going to be great working with Gina. She and I are like minded in our rescue work and well....she's nothing short of my idol when it comes to TNR. Gina is the level head of our two headed "team". I'm the highly emotional, "people person" who can talk to any nut-case that comes down the pipe and Gina is the strong, calm one who can figure out a way to get any rescue project done (alleviating my crying and pulling my hair out).

Gina and I will continue to have our own separate rescues as we are both control types and need to be in charge. But we will also continue to help each other out so that more cats can be TNR'd and rescued.

It's really great news! Thank you Dr. Langlois for helping us make life for ferals and strays better!

Dizzy Gillespie

Hello Feral Friends-

Thank you all who read this blog. I don't know how many people read my posts, but I feel lots of love and support, so for you...dear reader, I'm grateful.

The sick cats from the barn are still in my garage. Today I took the remaining 4 that had not yet been fixed in for surgery. When trapped two weeks ago, they were too sick to be put under. On advisement of Gina Marvin, I medicated them first.

One of the cats is friendly and comes to the front of his cage. He shares his cage with yet another orange/white (they all are after all) kitty who hides behind a box. Today I named this gentle little boy Gillespie (ala Dizzy Gillespie). Why name a cat Gillespie? Well, it's cuz after inspection by Dr. Langlois and his assistant, Kathy, this sweetie was diagnosed with a condition that gives him a head tilt and has him walking in circles. He is unable to easily cross the room. He just goes in circles. He's done fine in the cage and found his food and litter box. And he has survived this long in the barn, so he must be able to get from point A to point B and jump because at the farm, he was fed on the lower level of the barn, but we trapped him in the loft.

I'm not sure what Gina and I are going to do with Dizzy, but we are going to give him the best chance at a normal life that we can. While at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in 2004, I met several cats with such neurological problems. They were well cared for and living a good life despite their handicap. I am hoping that someone who wants to give a special little boy a chance at a nice life, will step up and offer him a place in their heart and home.

If you know such a kind soul, please send them his way.

Thanks for reading-
Carol

The lastest tear jerker poem

Thank you my dear sweet Darla Alexander!

The young pup and the older dog were laying in the shade of a large tree watching the reunions taking place at the end of the Rainbow Bridge. They kept a sharp lookout for the ones they loved.

Sometimes a man, woman or even and entire family would approach the Bridge and be greeted by their beloved pets. Together, they would cross the Bridge.... as a family.

The young dog playfully nipped the old timer and said ''Look, something wonderful is happening". "Quick", replied the old dog, "get over to the fence."

"But that is not my owner", replied the pup, who did as he was told, and went to the fence.

Thousands of pets surged forward as a figure bathed in pure white light walked on the path towards the Bridge. As the glowing figure passed, each dog bowed his head with love and respect.

The figure approaching the Bridge stopped and smiled. The figure raised both arms with palms out as if offering a welcoming hug. This was meant by a joyous menagerie of assorted animals. Happy tears fell from the eyes of the glowing figure as it reached out to touch several particular beloved animals. Together, they went as a family across the bridge.

The young pup was in total awe as the glow faded. "Was that an angel?" he whispered. "No", replied the older dog, "that was a person who worked rescue".

Another feral friend suggested I put a paypal button on my blog so that those of you who would like to make a donation to my cause, CAN!

So here it is. Feel free to send me some money via paypal.com.
I'm not currently a bona-fide charity, so the donation won't be tax deductible. But hey, neither was the 10K I shelled out last year!
